High definition television is all the rage nowadays, and why wouldn’t it be? Never before have television owners been able to experience such a life-like experience. The colors are deeper, the picture incredible.
Want to see the big game? Who needs to bother with gridlock traffic and spend a small fortune on tickets, parking, and concessions? And don’t forget about the possibility that you’ll have someone tall in front of you blocking your view, or a frenzied fan behind you that gets a little too excited and spills a drink on your head.
It’s much less of a hassle to watch it on TV instead. There’s nothing blocking your view, no cold beverage running down your neck, and with HD, it’s like you’re really there anyways…
But before you purchase any HD programming, know that it’ll be a waste if you don’t first get a HD receiver. These devices, you guessed it, “receive” the HD signals and translate it into the crisp, clear image you see on the screen. Also, you’ll need not just any TV, but a HD TV.
DirecTV: The Genie and the Genie Mini
At Columbia Basin Satellite we carry both Dish and DirecTV programming and products, and each provider has their own set of HD receivers.
First, we’ll go over what DirecTV has to offer: the Genie and the Genie Mini. How it works is you hook up the Genie to the TV you use the most and then you use a Genie Mini for every other TV in your house. Features of this system include:
- Record up to 5 shows at the same time
- Store up to 200 hours of HD content
- Schedule recordings up to 2 weeks in advance
- Watch a show you started on one TV on another TV
- Use up to 8 Genie Minis on the same main Genie
- Works both inside and outside
Dish: The Hopper and the Joey
Dish uses a similar system as DirecTV, with a Hopper for your most-watched TV and the Joey (baby kangaroo, get it?) for your other TVs. Features include:
- Record up to 8 shows at the same time
- Store up to 250 hours of HD content
- For certain programs you don’t even have to fast forward through commercials: the Hopper will do it for you.
… And Everything Else
The Genie and the Hopper aren’t the only HD receivers on the market.
There is good reason why we focused on those two products, though, as they will allow you to store more content, record more content at the same time, and they boast more features than anything else you’d be able to find.
But maybe you don’t watch that much TV in the first place, so you’d like something a little less powerful and little more affordable.
We’ve got you covered with many affordable HD receiver options to choose from in addition to the Genie and the Hopper.
